Palmetto, Florida — The Manatee County Sheriff’s Office is reporting that a show horse was found slaughtered on Sunday October 25th, 2015 in Palmetto. “Just dismembered him right there and just left his rib cage and his neck and head“. The owner of Phedras De Blondel at Imperial Farms, Steve Stephens, said the horse, Phedras De Blondel, had just arrived in the United States recently after being purchased for $200,000. “Horrible…unbelievable,” he said. His wife noticed their brand new horse was missing Sunday morning. A search led to a broken fence. Then — the discovery. All four legs were cut off of him. I don’t mean at the knee, I mean from his shoulder,” Stephens said. Investigators believe the horse was slaughtered sometime between 8:00 p.m. and 6:45 a.m. They believe the suspects slaughtered the horse for meat. “This type of thing has been going on in our state, not here though,” said Dave Bristow with the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office. Bristow said the penalty for this crime includes burglary, animal cruelty and even more charges potentially. “It’s a horrible crime scene and obviously for the owner to have to go through this is just absolutely terrible,” he added.
In 2009, at least 17 butchered horses were found in Miami-Dade County, where officials reported a dramatic increase in the horse meat market. Activists at the time said the meat can cost anywhere from $10 to $20 a pound. Earlier in October, authorities in Palm Beach County raided three slaughterhouses and arrested six people in connection with the illegal slaughter and sale of horses. And in July, a three-year-old competitive show horse named Smart Amanda Whiz was found slaughtered for its meat. The horse had been led from its stall and taken far from the barn, where it was carved up so professionally that the authorities are investigating it as a case of animal cruelty carried out by an expert butcher for meat.“He had been filleted,” Ms. Stephens, the horse’s owner, said in a telephone interview on Monday. “The slices were so deliberate and so well done that the moment you saw it: This was a professional.” The discovery of the horse, named Phedras de Blondel, in a remote pasture near woods at Imperial Farms Equestrian Center added a new element in a string of recent crimes involving the killings of stolen livestock for meat in Florida.
UPDATE November 9th, 2015: Two men seen on surveillance video “not the guys”. I was able to figure out what the year, make, and model of the van the two guys where driving and contacted the Manatee County Sheriff Office Saturday Morn November 7th and they subsequently found them Saturday afternoon. PALMETTO, FL (WFLA) – Manatee County detectives said they have identified the two men in the horse slaughter case and determined that the subjects had no involvement or new information in this case. Detectives continue to investigate. The prized show horse was taken from its stall at a Palmetto horse farm, killed and butchered, possibly for its meat. A reward fund was set up and grown to more than $50,000 for information that would lead to the capture of the suspects. Last Thursday detectives released surveillance images of two men who may have information about the show horse’s killing. Sunday afternoon detectives confirmed that they have identified the men and concluded that they had no involvement or information in this case.
