Ross Sullivan would have had to do something very violent for him to be court ordered to a Mental Hospital for 3 years?
The Glendale movie group, led by young director Allan Silliphant, was shooting the film ‘Deja Vive’ in the Skid Row section of L.A. near 6th and Main St, the cops were called when nearby residents spotted the group filming an all too real murder scene. The young film crew are almost all students of Glendale High School. Zodiac Suspect Ross Sullivan gleefully claimed to students at RCC that he had been in the Patton State Mental Hospital for the criminally insane in Patton CA from 11/1/1961 to 2/1/1964.
According to the History Channel’s website, Ross Sullivan was a student at Riverside City Community College during the 1966 murder of Cheri Jo Bates in Riverside, California — a killing that bore many similarities to those committed by the Zodiac. As detailed in The Hunt for the Zodiac Killer, Bates’ killer stalked her, disabled her car, used a knife as a weapon, and left military boot prints at the crime scene, all details in line with the Zodiac’s M.O.. Ross Sullivan started at Riverside City community College on 9/11/1961, he was gone from the area (Glendale-Riverside CA) from 11/1/1961 to 2/1/1964. Zodiac Suspect Ross Sullivan gleefully claimed to students at RCC that he had been in the Patton State Mental Hospital for the criminally insane in Patton CA from 11/1/1961 to 2/1/1964.
DSH-Patton mental hospital for criminally insane Patton CA provides treatment to forensically and civilly committed patients within a secure treatment area. The hospital does not accept voluntary admissions. Felony and misdemeanor defendants found incompetent by a court are placed in a state hospital where the focus of treatment is to help them regain trial competency and return them to court so they may be adjudicated on their pending charges. Those patients who are unable to be restored to competency within a three (3) year time period are returned to the court to determine future status and may be recommitted civilly pursuant to WIC 5008, as a Murphy Conservatee. Ross Sullivan gleefully claimed to students at RCC that he had been in Patton State Mental Hospital for criminally insane from 11/1/1961 to 2/1/1964, or three (3) years.
It turned out that Ross Sullivan’s Brother Tim, married a girl named Bonnie. Bonnie was good Friends with 1966 Riverside City College Zodiac Victim, Cheri Jo Bates. It was also learned, that allegedly, Ross’s Brother Tim, believed that Ross Sullivan was the Zodiac Killer. No other details about Tim’s beliefs is available, and Tim is now deceased. It has been verified that Ross Sullivan was a paranoid schizophrenic who had been in mental institutions at various times. In 1973, a mental conservatorship was put in place for Ross in Santa Cruz CA. This meant that due to his mental illness, Ross could no longer take care of himself. Ross died of natural causes in 1977 in Santa Cruz, CA. The Zodiac Killer killed Victims in Vallejo, Napa, And San Francisco, CA from December, 1968 to October, 1969. Additionally, he mailed letters to newspapers from August 1969 until July, 1974. All of these letters were postmarked in the SF or Alameda County areas. It’s important to note, Zodiac wrote letters on a fairly regular basis from August 1969 until March, 1971. His letters then stopped without warning until his next letter was received in January, 1974. No more Zodiac murders or letters from the Zodiac after the death of Ross Sullivan in 1977.
Why Did ‘Zodiac Serial Killer’ Name Himself the ‘Zodiac’ is There a Link to ‘Twilight Zone’ TV Series? The Zodiac Killer or Zodiac was a serial killer who operated in Northern California from at least the late 1960s to the early 1970s. The Zodiac killer originated the name “Zodiac” in a series of taunting letters sent to the local San Francisco Bay Area press, he named himself the Zodiac. The killer’s identity remains unknown. The self-proclaimed Zodiac Killer was directly linked to at least five murders in Northern California in 1968 and 1969 and may have been responsible for many more. He taunted police and made threats through letters sent to area newspapers from 1969 to 1974, before abruptly ceasing communication. Despite intensive investigations, no one was ever arrested for the crimes and the case remains open.
HISTORY CHANNEL: A former LAPD homicide detective and a cold case expert believe they’ve made a breakthrough that could finally bring someone to justice. Sal LaBarbera and Ken Mains think the person responsible could be Ross Sullivan, (who moved to Glendale CA in 1957 from Binghamton NY), who was the original suspect in one of the murders. The team has extracted DNA from the clothing of one murder victim — Cheri Jo Bates — that may expose the killer. The pair’s search features in a new History Channel documentary series, The Hunt For The Zodiac Killer. Cheri Jo Bates was stabbed in October, 1966 after leaving the library at Riverside Community College. It was a killing the Zodiac Killer claimed. Ross Sullivan started at Riverside City Community College (RCC) in 1961 (age 20), he sent RCC transcripts to UC Santa Cruz in 1967 (age 26), it appears he was still in Riverside CA in 1966 when Cheri Jo Bates was murdered. ZODIAC SUSPECT: Ross Mercer Stephen Sullivan born in Syracuse NY, DOB 07-28-1941.
The Twilight Zone TV series ran from 1959 to 1964 on CBS. The Zodiac murders began in 1966 (Cheri Jo Bates). In the opening sequence of Rod Serling’s ‘Twilight Zone’, Mr Serling is shown along with an assortment of items floating around, one being a clock with the signs of the Zodiac in the inner circle of the clock. No one knows why or how or what influenced the Zodiac Killer to name himself “Zodiac”.
Rod Serling, the creator of the Twilight Zone TV series, was a graduate of Binghamton Central High School in Binghamton NY in 1943, same place Zodiac Killer suspect Ross Sullivan went to from 1956 to 1957. Ross Sullivan and his parents moved to Glendale CA in fall of 1957. The Twilight Zone TV show began filming in fall of 1958 in Culver City CA, at that time Ross Sullivan was living nearby in Glendale CA.
Zodiac Killer suspect Ross Sullivan would have been a big fan of the Twilight Zone TV series from 1959 to 1964 knowing that the show’s host went to the same high school as he did in Binghamton NY, and it’s clock with the signs of the Zodiac on it, just saying!

There is an interesting typed letter from the Riverside City College Library, 4800 Magnolia Avenue, Riverside, California, concerning the case of Cheri Jo Bates, savagely murdered on October 30th 1966 outside the library. Some of the workers at the RCC had suspicions about Ross Sullivan, based on his character and various circumstantial evidence.
Unfortunately for them, their suspect, Ross Sullivan was not apparently held in the same regard by police at the time of Cheri Jo Bates’ murder. Certainly Cheri Jo Bates knew her killer; she was familiar enough to the killer to walk away from the library with him. Ross Sullivan not only worked at the RCC library, but he knew Cheri Jo through his brother.
Ross M. Sullivan’s father, Harold Sullivan, was a minister at YMCA’s in NYC (early 1950s); Binghamton, NY (1954- Summer 1957); and Glendale, CA (Summer 1957 to 1959). Ross M. Sullivan’s family was strongly associated with the YMCA from New York to California. In 1956, Ross M. Sullivan was a youth pastor at the Binghamton YMCA on Washington Street and on the YMCA swim team, he also was on the swim team for Binghamton Central High School (BCHS) as a sophomore (10th grade). In a Binghamton Press December 18, 1955 article Ross Sullivan is listed as winning the 40 yard backstroke for the Binghamton YMCA team. Binghamton’s first YMCA opened 150 years ago as a place for men working on the railroad to meet together for Bible study, as well as a place for them to stay. I recall using the gym facilities in the 1960’s on Washington Street behind the Metro Center where we played basketball and boxed and swam in the large indoor pool— the Binghamton Y’s current building on Susquehanna Street was purchased in 1969.
